Porphyry: technical guide

When we talk about porphyry we are referring to a product and know-how that spans time, sought after for its beauty, strength and durability, one of the most popular Italian products abroad and among the most widely used natural stones in architecture. Rocks similar to Porphyry can be found all over the world, but only in the Trentino Alto Adige district do they have the ideal characteristics to become prized products for paving squares and urban streets, parks, villas, and gardens, proven by a centuries-old tradition of use. Trentino Porphyry is an extraordinary resource, abundant but not infinite, capable of telling the world about the value and beauty of Made in Italy. For this reason, it is strategic to enhance its value and guide to its correct use through a communication dedicated to designers, users and administrators in which it clearly emerges why Trentino Porphyry is so special, how pavings are designed, how they are laid, how the production cycle is managed, how the circular economy and the sustainability of the product are pursued and implemented. Hence the project to produce the PORFIDO volume, a publication of value in content and form designed to be the professional knowledge tool for the industry. Following in the footsteps of the manuals of several decades ago, in a contemporary key and on a national and global scale, the guide in fact illustrates from a genetic, regulatory and application point of view the product expression of a sector that has recently rediscovered a new international destination, with exports to more than 50 countries.

When I was born in 1966, Emilio Gaffuri had already been studying porphyry for 40 years, constantly searching for the best use and application techniques for laying this incomparable material. Probably good blood does not lie if it is true that it was from my grandfather Emilio that I inherited an innate predisposition to discomfort at seeing uneven stone floors or worse, badly laid and ugly. In life I have tried to give continuity to the virtuous family tradition, alternating practical experience in the field of natural stone paving with teaching and tutoring in courses for the professional training of porphyry installers from the basic level up to Master Craftsmen installers. On behalf of E.S.Po, Porphyry Development Authority, I have produced various technical publications and managed in-depth seminars at numerous Italian universities. Recently, I contributed to the drafting of UNI 11322:2009 and UNI 11714-1:2018 standards. Since 2014, I have been the director of Consorzio Italiano Porfido del Trentino - Italporphyry. I dedicate this publication-written by four hands with Grazia Signori-to all those who care about natural stone.

I am one of 71 Italian Eurogeologists. Born and raised in Bergamo, Italy, the rest is a life in a suitcase. As a child I collected stones while contemplating nature; I wanted to be a researcher to save lives, but my internal gps fatally brought me back to geology. And since 1999, ornamental stones have become my fixation. Since then-at CNR first and at the Veneto Marble District Test Laboratory later-I have investigated, observed, listened to, analyzed, crushed, shattered and ... destroyed many, more than 4,000 of them from all over the world. Continually seeking the most intimate understanding of their voices, their secrets, their character and their potential. Today I coordinate the UNI standards table dedicated to stones in construction and with Mapei I am working on stone roads for the future. For the Ateneo di Scienze Lettere ed Arti of Bergamo and for the Italian Association of Geology and Tourism I carry out study and popularization projects to tell adults and children alike the infinite stories and colors of the geological soul of cities. Always with the same wonder of that little girl collecting stones. Recent publications include: Lost Oceans shifting sands volatile rivers dormant volcanoes (Ateneo di Scienze Lettere e Arti di Bergamo, 2019) and Ingresses of Milan (Taschen, 2017, which I co-authored). This volume, written in four hands with Andrea Angheben, is for those who care about natural stone, its beauty and the legacy it transmits to us and with which it guides us: the "savoir faire" made of intuition, sweat, ingenuity, hard work, determination, taste, and passion of those who have gone before us and of those who, still today, dedicate themselves to this fascinating world.
